How do you approach web design for a blue-collar client?

I ask because I'm often designing for clients where clean, modern web design looks out of place - I'm talking about plumbers, different kinds of technicians, etc. Not to mention that fact that clean, modern web design isn't likely to be approved by that client in the first place.

Do you have any examples or best practices for web sites like these?
