I'm lead developer at an ad agency in Maryland. Currently we have 3 designers on staff with, almost exclusively, print backgrounds. The art director has made significant strides in his web design abilities over the past year. He and I have had many conversations about his progress and places for him to find inspiration. This post really isn't about him though. It's about a very talented print designer. She makes beautiful invitations, very classy/professional folders and brochures and generally does great print work.
I have seen improvement with her web design skills but she hasn't been able to progress as much as either of us would like. She came to me for help and I've done my best but I'm not sure my best is good enough. I write code and only "design" when I have to. What I mean is, I have a graphic design degree but I work with 3 people who make stuff more "designy" than I ever could. I'm looking for resources that I can vet and then turn over to my designer in an organized fashion. She is relatively young and grew up with the internet just as I have but she get's overwhelmed when it comes to web.
We have discussed things like csszengarden, smashing mag, httpster and similar sites. I don't want to believe that she isn't trying hard enough so I'm hoping you guys/gals can point us in the right direction. I'm already paying for treehouse and lynda and unless I'm not searching the correct strings there doesn't seem to be anything that's design without code (also, something we've been working on).
Any thoughts or suggestions would be awesome. Thanks!
