I'm quite new to CSS Designing, in fact I'm not from the Designing camp, but from Development/Programming camp who is just interested in web design.
Every time I visit a new website that I feel looks elegant, I have this habit of firing up my firefox console and try and analyze things like what html tags they have used, what is the layout strategy, how the CSS is modularized, etc.. Of late however, I've come to realize that these small low-level details are not what makes an elegant design. But these are just an implementation detail of a larger design strategy. So I've started asking myself these questions instead:
- What makes this website look so good?
- Is it typography? (what fonts are used)
- Is it the color combination (is there a pattern? - navs, buttons, tabs, active ones)
- What effect does animation have here? (such as bootstrap scrollspy plugin and jQuery plugins)
- What role do the pictures play here - both backgrounds and thumbnails? Will the site look as good if they were removed?
All in all, I'm looking for all factors that affect the look and feel of a site arranged by importance, such as (this is just an estimate):
- Typography: 45%
- Layout strategy: 30%
- Color combination: 5%
- Animation used: 5%
- Background used: 5%
- Navbar styling: 5%
- Scroll styling: 5%
These are just numbers I've pulled out of thin air, they are 100% subjective and may not mean anything at all. I would still like to know your opinion on this - what factors make a website look elegant or beautiful?
