Looking at Semplice to build my simple portfolio. Is there anything better for my needs?

Hey guys,

I've got a pretty simple website. Most of my work is either a single image or single video. Here is a crappy temp site I've got (http://subver.com) built with indexhibit.

I've got a new design I'd like to build (Here is a rough example of the work page: http://ift.tt/1SK7EeH - home: http://subver.com/temp/ - I do plan on changing it around but I think you get the idea) and Semplice (http://semplicelabs.com) looks pretty nice but I've also read some negative things on it, especially with it not being truly responsive and how it can look a bit crappy on mobile devices.

So basically, I'm looking for something to use with Wordpress (ideally) for a simple portfolio site. It will essentially be columns of thumbnails that display the full image in a lightbox (not a fan of having a separate page for single images), but having the option to show multiple images per "thumbnail" would be nice (for example: showing my "sketchbook" as a single thumbnail and clicking through all the images)

One thing I am keeping in mind is that I'd like to add a shop soon, selling art prints and hopefully tshirts. Not sure how to approach that yet, though.

Anyway.. I'm looking for suggestions. Semplice looks nice especially if I decide to change my design (which will probably happen) but I'm hesitant to drop $90 after reading some negative things about it.

Is there anything else out there similar/better than Semplice? Something I can use for many different portfolio designs? I don't think I need much, Semplice might even be overkill for my needs, but it does look nice and I can always use it to change up my design.

Anyway, sorry for the long post, but really any suggestions would be great. My last option is getting someone at my work to develop it for me with Wordpress as the CMS, but I'd love to be able to do it myself.

I can definitely change and edit some code if I have to but building it all from scratch scares me and I'm not really up to date on all the new HTML/CSS stuff, especially when it comes to cross-browser compatibility and having things responsive, etc..

Thanks guys!
