For those of you who have incorporated background videos, either by your own decision or at the direction of an employer/client, what were the reasons?

When I hit a website that has a background video, I have found all of them to be gratuitous, distracting, and without value. But that's me. Maybe I'm just old and cranky. Feel free to confirm that.
