Make content bg different from body bg to increase readability. Thoughts?

It is my hypothesis that the main content on this version is more readable than the main content on this version.

The only difference between the two versions is that v1 has a body background of #f9f9f9 and v2 has a body background of #fff.

a) Do you agree with my hypothesis? and b) Are there any resources where I can learn more about this? I tried Googling many queries, but I don't know exactly what this technique is called.
