UX Designers - How much data do you show to back up your recommendations and choices?

We all use various levels of research to make decisions while designing, particularly interactions, but a lot of it is simply stuff we know because we stay up to date in our field and have good instinct. How much information (studies, analytics, etc) do you give a client to demonstrate why you've made certain choices? How would you reply if a client asked your reasons for something, and the answer was as simple as, "I just know because it's my job to know"?
