Is faux bold never acceptable?

I hacked a purchased WordPress theme in order to make a professional website. (That is, the website will be used for someone's professional activities.)

I got rid of the original font stack and put in a different web font, the aesthetically elegant serif Arapey from Google Fonts. The italic variant comes through beautifully.

Problem is that Arapey doesn't have a bold variant. There is one intentionally bolded word in the prominent "About" text on the homepage, and it looks glaringly obvious to me that it is a faux bold rather than a real bold. However, I guess that most people who aren't designers or web nerds wouldn't notice.

Other than that one case in prominent copy, the faux bold never appears in any UI labels or anywhere like that. However, any text in a blog post that the user bolded would unfortunately appear in the faux bold.

Do people consider using a faux bold to be one of those unpardonable sins, like using the Papyrus font?

Epic visual tool
