First time designing something completely from scratch - Tips?

Hey /r/design ! I'm currently studyin design, but starting on the summer I'm involved in a project where it's the first time I'm actually getting paid good money, and my job is to create a complete design and brand for a product the company is planning on launching.

The company wants the product to be completely standalone and have no reference to their brand, so in a way I am creating something completely from scratch.

I'm a bit puzzled as to where do I start with this? So many things in school have been quite narrow or clear on what part needs to be done.

Any help?
