Password protected portfolios—good idea or bad?

Hey design, I'm currently working on updating my portfolio to include new projects. However, my current employer is against the designers putting their work on personal websites and portfolios in fear of competitors "stealing ideas".

Of course I want to include my recent work, is password protecting my portfolio a good idea (I work with very nosy people, by the way)? In case I'm looking for new work, I'm afraid future hiring managers won't want to bother with putting in a password (mine is very simple and just 5 characters) to view my work.

What do you guys think who have more experience with professional portfolios?

Thanks!
