I studied biochemistry in college, and for a long time planned to pursue a career in medicine. The farther I got down that path, however, the more I realized that I wasn't right for medicine and it wasn't right for me. So around 9 months ago I quit my job in clinical research, and every step I've taken away from that has been hard and painful. The shame of pretty much abandoning 4 years of hard work and throwing away thousands of dollars in tuition has been pretty difficult for me.
About 5 months ago I started teaching myself the Adobe suite, and I kind of took off with it. It just clicked with me, and for the first time in years I felt like I was doing something that played to my strengths, not because I liked the idea of doing it but because I liked doing it, which was pretty monumental to me.
Anyway the reason I'm posting this today is that after quitting my job, having to move to a cheaper apartment, eating up my savings and pretty much starting from scratch, I got accepted to study graphic/web design at a great design school in my state and today just finished my first paid freelance gig. Things are still pretty shitty for me financially, but its a great feeling to be on a path where I know I belong. I've got a shit ton to learn and can't wait to do it.
Here's something from my first gig that I'm pretty proud of.
