Any advice on how Photo #1 became Photo #2?

Hey team,

I'm a writer and just had a cover artist put together an awesome cover for me - it's something I'm hoping to recreate at some point in the future (when I get better at my own design skills).

Can anyone suggest how #1 became #2? Like, what process the artist would have used to get that sort of warm/chiarascuoro effect on the photo?
