Can you guys help me with a very newbie question?

Hi guys,

so I've recently been learning html/css and am working my way through php and java, but I have a question that I fear is kind of stupid. I want to set up a basic website just for me to build and use to host my writing (articles, reviews, that sort of thing) but I'm unsure of how to go about this bit. Should I buy a domain? And then, if this is done, how do I then code the site? Do I use notepad or similar and then port it over, if so, how? I just don't know where to start with actually building a real website now I have a basic understanding of it.

Just as a point, I'm not some startup and looking to make money or anything like that from my site, it's for fun/hobby/portfolio purposes. I'd just like a pointer on where to go from here. I'm UK based if that's at all relevant.
