Major help needed - web design/rebranding.

Hi everyone. Hope this is ok to post here, have no idea where to go for this so hopefully someone can help me?

So basically the company I work for have given me the not so small task of redesigning their brochures and website.

With regard in particular to the website - how do I even go about starting a project like this? Their website at the moment is pretty shitty and I went through and rewrote a lot of the copy, but there's a lot of it. I really don't know where to start.

When I'm reporting back to them with my progress, what is it they're expecting to see? My boss mentioned user experience which I have some knowledge of but I have no idea how to portray my ideas and thoughts to him and have no idea what checkboxes need to be covered on this task.

So basically, could someone tell me where to start with this and also probably what is expected when I report back to him?
