I'm working on a homepage redesign for a client. I've never been "in love" with homepage sliders: they push useful content down the page, they rarely seem useful, they generally don't convert well, and nobody ever really sees more than the first one or two slides.
Many experts in both the usability and seo fields recommend against them ( Useful Usability, Search Engine Land )
So why do so many websites still use sliders? is there some reason (other than management likes to see them) to use sliders that I'm missing out on? Do the same rules apply to full width "hero" images? Are sliders acceptable if there are CTA's on each slide?
I'm less interested in specific advice and far more interested in having a conversation about sliders, when they might be advantageous, arguments opposed to those by supposed experts mentioned above, and alternatives to homepage sliders.
TL;DR; Let's have a conversation about sliders.
