Hey everyone,
I'm a filmmaker who is a bit of a generalist, and I like to explore everything. I'm so much of a generalist that I hesitate to call myself a filmmaker even though it's my main thing. I like the interconnectedness of all fields, and I know that exposure to different ideas from different fields benefits my field. I'm a specialist generalist, you could say.
So, over the years I've learned film, music, graphic design, animation, and I took a web design course in school.
The problem is, I forgot most of what I was taught when it comes to web design. Mostly because it didn't excite me.
So, now I'm at a point in my life where I want to start a small online business that is a fine art curation subscription service.
My budget for web design is 200 bucks, but it turns out that's not enough to do what I want. (I know it's very little). So I decided I'm going to design the website by myself.
So far, I've managed to design a header, and add the text I want, but that's it.
My question is: do you have any resources that can help me learn by doing? A place where I can ask questions and get specific answers for what I want to do?
I don't want a tutorial on all of Dreamweaver so I can learn it all over again. I want to learn this way: I want to achieve A, but in order to achieve A, I must learn just a little bit of B, and I can achieve A in no time, etc.
Sometimes it's not as easy as looking for youtube tutorials because I want to do very specific tasks that don't exist in tutorials, or I don't have the terminology/vocabulary to search for accurately.
For example, I want to design my website sort of like a book with Retina fidelity. It's not exactly like a book (as in, it's not a simulation with paper flipping, gloss, etc.) it's only a design inspired by fine art books, 2, split in half with maybe a little bit of shading, and subtle movement. On one half it's text like a book, and on the other, examples of my fine art photography curation services..
That's the task I'm stuck at right now.
There's something about fontshop that makes their website look like it's real and tangible, and I like that and would like to apply that as much as possible. I don't like the feeling of seeing low quality jpegs, or slow clunky flash designs. I want my website to be elegant, but also very quick to load, with no loading circles and whatnot. But I'm not sure what sort of code would be best for this. I'm not entirely sure what fontshop uses, but if anyone knows I'd love some help.
