The Design Update: Vertical whitespace in web design?

Do you guys have any tips or hacks for working with vertical whitespace? How do designers decide how much space to add between headings and the content below, distinct sections and around the content?

Do you follow some unit or scale for the same? I feel very uncomfortable putting too much space but some designers are able to do that make things look so good! Is this a very vague question?
