What's the name for the process of putting an image onto cardboard?

Say in something like a point of sale stand, where it's most likely cardboard, how do they put the image onto it? There's no way to print onto cardboard in high quality AFAIK. So what's the secret here. Even if it's a case of applying some sort of vinyl onto the cardboard, what's the process ?
