a coworker asked me to make a "marathon race themed" dynamic progress bar for the website - I have no idea where to begin on the theme part of it. Help?

I'm in charge of the website for a medium-market public radio organization and we are about to ask our listeners for donations like we do each fall. This year's theme is like a marathon race I guess. A foot race.

They want a progress bar that they can update to show how close we are to the goal, I can make that no problem, but I'm really struggling to visualize a completed project that has a race theme to it. It can't be too "clip art" like, too cheesy, but I would like it to be fun and imaginative.

Anybody have any ideas?
