Setting up brand guidelines for a brand you didnt create

Hi gang, just want to hear your thoughts.

I joined my team late this year and recently was tasked to create brand guidelines two other teammates have created prior to my employment.

I thought, sure, it shouldn't be that difficult - but I found myself having trouble. Isn't it more straightforward for the people who created the brand to do the guidelines?

Don't get me wrong, I'm all for contributing, just want to find the best way to do this so we can work better. The designer in charge has also told me not to fret too much over and just keep improving it as I go. It is now the third day of working on this and I'm scrapping my fifth version. Am I maybe too impatient? Haven't thought it through enough?
