Before 2014, this was the logo of the Toronto Raptors.
It was, obviously, horrible.
If you have not seen the new logo yet, think about the difficulty of the assignment here. It needs to be a team logo, using a red/black/white (even purple) color scheme, for a Canadian, dinosaur-themed professional basketball team. THAT is a fucking design challenge my friends. What would you have done? A dino hand spinning a basketball on one claw? A dinosaur head with basketball eyes? A basketball with a dinosaur mouth? It's an interesting design hypothetical because it can go so bad, so fast.
Here is the replacement design created by Sid Lee Toronto.
It's a great update, it's simple but not entirely obvious, actually it's pretty subtle for something that needs to be as easily grasped as a sports team logo. You get the nod to the raptor claws without them being explicit and cartoony, and the rips are the correct size to lead into the lines of the ball such that when viewed at any size it reads as a basketball, but not just a basketball.
Anyway I think it's a fantastic logo. In a vacuum it may not be an all-time great or anything, but when you consider the inherent difficulty of the assignment I think it's an extremely impressive result.
