Tips for compressing a PDF file for print?

I've put together 4 book covers for a friend, who is using a service called Create Space to print his books. After putting the designs together, and firing off the 150mb or so files to him, he then tells me they have a 40mb cap on uploads.

My experience with print-ready files is that 40mb isn't a ton to work with - am I off base with that? For these covers, the whole spread (front, spine, and back) is about 12" x 8" and with a couple layered photos, that adds up quick.

So I'm at 150-200mb on some of these covers, but this Create Space company wants them <40mb. I realize there are a lot of variables in how I put my files together, but any general tips? Or is 40mb really an insane request?
