Fake Company Logo (“Fauxgo”) - Legal Considerations?

So here’s a question: are there any guidelines on developing fake companies/logos as far as avoiding potential legal problems go?

I have some common sense ideas, like checking for a name already existing (in the same “market space” before using it).

I’ve done some google searches on legal considerations when making up fake companies, but I didn’t find any good guidelines for it. Maybe I am simply worrying too much or being paranoid?
