Help with general guidelines for favicon design (small icon design in general)

I am trying to design a favicon icon for a web project I am working on. I mostly a software engineer but enjoy learning about design (so forgive if my questions are basic).

Anyway I designed something as a vector graphic in Sketch. However when I export to a 32x32 PNG it just looks like a blob of nothing. I'm thinking maybe this is because my icon has a lot of lines that dont rasterize well.

But then I look at something like the gmail icon https://ssl.gstatic.com/ui/v1/icons/mail/images/favicon5.ico. Which has an impressive amount of detail for how small it is.

TL;DR: Could I get some basic guidelines for design beautiful looking icons, when I am limited to 32x32 pixels.
