How do you feel about google's Material Design? Still going strong or not?

I am making my first app right now and designing the icons. I want to make the icons inside the app integrate well with the rest of android, but am hesitant to make them too material-y for fear that they will become dated in a year or two. So, how strong is the Material Design trend in 2016? Are there any other sources of inspiration I could use that are more relevant today?

Hey Reddit, what are you "Go to" design sites?

Lately I've been struggling with moivation issues, and I'm trying to find more sources of inspiration as well as design news sites to just set as my homepage and force myself to skim everytime I open my browser.

Any recomendations?

Resume size ?

Hi guys, I am about to graduate so I have to do some giveaway at my portfolio show. I have this idea to put my resume inside a brochure but the resume will not be 8.5 x 11, it will be 7.5 x 7.5.

Just wondering will it be ok if I do that ? Is there any specific rule about resume size or we can do whatever we want as a designer ?

So far I have not seen any resume that is smaller than 8.5 x 11 so just want to make sure I don't break any industry's standards.

How do you react/deal with clients who change your designs later on?

I just had a client who i did a major work for about 2 years ago, everything from branding to website design, change the work i did, its derivative from my work, but its lesser quality in my eyes. They hired another full agency instead of contacting me to change or make the items they needed.

On one hand, the clients has full right to do this of course.

On the second, i feel like its a shame to go for a lower quality, and that they didn't reach out to me first to see if i could provide them with what they needed.

How would you react/deal with such a situation?

Employers: When do you review a potential candidate's portfolio? Before initial contact, or after? [x-post from r/userexperience]

I'm trying to get an understanding of how people decide to contact a potential candidate without first taking a look at the work that person has done?

Several of my colleagues are/have scrambling/scrambled to put together portfolios because a recruiter or hiring manager has just contacted them for some sort of design role, and they don't have a prepared body of work to show them.

Without first looking through a portfolio, what things do you consider? At what point during the hiring process do you take a look at their work?

Thanks!

[Question] Employers, do you care for kinetic type motion designs or conceptual illustrations/motion designs?

I'm drafting my design portfolio projects currently, as I joined the program late and need to get the ball rolling. I'd like to incorporate some client-based work, but I might have to make due for now without it. I want to be a motion designer but I'm still fairly new to design so it may be quite a bite for me to chew at the moment.

Right now I have ideas along the lines of:

  • Infographics
  • Typographical Posters/Cards/etc.
  • Conceptual Illustrations/Photo-Manipulation
  • Brand/Merchandizing/Advertising (Logos, Intros, Re-Interpretations, Posters, Merchandise, etc.)
  • Publications (Print/Digital)
  • Kinetic Typography
  • Flat Animated Explainer Video
  • Conceptual Shorts (Gifs/Short Narratives)

What do you think? After dabbling in these areas I only planned on picking about 5 very quality projects I could focus more-so on. What 5 (or fewer) areas do you think I'd be best off pursuing?

Thanks for any help or advice!

Advice Needed - Website Cost Estimate

So, I have my first request to build a website. I've only every built my own (chelseasartistry.com), so I'm not entirely sure where to start with the estimate process. They gave me a sample website, said they pretty much want the same thing, same number of pages minus videos and blogs. It'll be an information only site, no e-commerce. They will provide all images (I'm assuming I'll have to do some color correction, hoping not. Do I include that on the estimate?), text, and logos. They also want me to include the domain and hosting.

On the estimate I've included the price of the domain and hosting rounded up to the nearest 10 to include a little extra for my time doing that. Do I use my own email address, do I use theirs, do I create a new email for this?

I've included an estimate of 3 hours for the initial design (master pages plus layout of other pages).

I've estimated about a half hour for each page (adding text and images onto the layout). The sample site he gave me had 125 pages.

I've included 2 hours for any corrections.

I will require a 10% deposit upon agreement of the estimate, 40% upon delivery of initial review, and the rest upon completion.

Am I missing anything? Am I over/underestimating my time? Any help or advice will be welcome.

Also, I'll be creating this in Adobe Muse... I'm not a coder. Props to those of you who are.

How do I match this effect?

Hey guys, I'm working on my web portfolio and I've used this as my branding inspiration.

I love the tone and I love the mood it sets - and I really want to emulate it for a photo of my own.

Only issue is I can't figure out how.

I've tried desaturating it and gradient-mapping for the yellow tinge, but nothings come up right yet.

Hoping to get some insight if anyone could share some!

Calgary, and "wild west" mentality

I moved to Calgary two years ago now, to my own surprise and even that of my close friends and family.

I work as an architect and have experience working / living in Copenhagen Amsterdam and Rotterdam. I wanted to draw a slight comparison between the business mentality of the Dutch and Albertans, and discuss the built environment of both Calgary and Rotterdam where I feel there are many contrasts. Rotterdam is the modern "business center" of the Netherlands.

In Calgary you hear a lot - and I can definitely feel, a real "go get it" attitude to most endeavors. This is why it has been hailed as the business capital of the country. And I really do get that sense - an ease in the ability to get involved in things one is genuinely interested in - to begin working on them with others at a certain scale. However, this sentiment doesn't seem to be reflected in our built environment and I would suspect it might have to do with the complex nature of how a building comes into reality. Or maybe a limit to what and how Albertan's approach experimentation at this scale with many others involved.

In the Netherlands for instance there is an intrinsic understanding of the importance of design as a necessity. That is, if they didn't engineer solutions to hold back the sea, and to design around their own unique conditions there would literally be no place to inhabit! Here it would appear design is understood generally as a luxury rather then a societal tool. You can't design a shed without an architect in the Netherlands, whereas in Alberta many single family homes that form a large part of our built environment do not require the opinion of an architectural designer.

The Dutch come off as highly conservative people, but at the exact same time are afraid to be viewed this way. There is a real sense of experimentation in the way they design and build their environments.

What do you think is the big challenge in applying the "go get it" attitude of the "wild west" to our built environment here, whether that be in architecture at the building scale or in Urban Planning at the city scale?

iPhone Apps Similar to STUDIO?

Hi everyone,

I run the social media accounts for my place of work. I really like to put up great images with nice designs or quotes. I usually rely on templates and then incorporate my own picture.

I've loved using the Studio app for this.

Does anyone have any other suggestions for iPhone apps that allow you to use pre-designed templates?
