I am neither a designer by trade nor by hobby, but I recently read The Design of Everyday Things and enjoyed it quite a lot(enough to read through three other books by Norman). I was wondering if there are any specific books or authors that come recommended here for non-designers?

Hi! I'm a 19yo guy, and I intend on applying for a college/university of graphic design, and I saw that they (with they I mean, pretty much every college/university I checked) request a portfolio, but I have no idea of how to make it, so I'd accept any tips. I never did any serious work that I'd put in a portfolio I guess, so is it just stuff that I do eventually?
