Versatility vs. individuality

When I look at other graphic designers during my daily peruse of Dribbble and Behance, I notice that they all seem to be one of two things: versatile or unique. Some seem to do designs that aren't exactly ground breaking or a new concept, but are just done well consistently. The other ones have developed a unique style that makes their work instantly recognizable, and feels fresh and genius.

Do you think it's better to become familiar with the commonalities of design, and be able to to make things that are simply well made ("I want my brand to look modern and simple like Apple" says the client), or build a style with principles and aesthetics not being used by anyone else, and hope that clients are okay with you taking the creative reigns?
