As a student designer and as a freelance designer, are you really allowed to change color on logos?

If I am making a header for a professional team (e-sports in this case) and they are sponsored by intel, nvidia, hyperx and so on. Am I allowed to change the color of the logo to fully white or fully green so it can match the image theme?

I have heard this does infringe copyright law and it is illegal to do so and the company does have the rights to sue me for it. However the chance that they would sue me is slim to none.

I've read that you are not allowed to change the twitter bird logo to any color except the standard blue, same goes for facebook i think.

What do I do in this case? Should I just change the color of the logo and don't care or should I keep the regular "ugly" color that does not fit in my image?

Thanks for any answers
