How can I best communicate with my work's graphic designer?

Hi

So I have an interest in design and am learning on my own. Currently, I do events for a non-profit. This involves a lot of flyers, banner, cards, promotional everything! We do have a part-time graphic designer on staff but everything she has ever created for me is, dull. I'm sorry to be blunt but it's old, clunky, uninteresting, sometimes it looks like a kids birthday party and sometimes it looks like something straight of out an MS Powerpoint screen.

I have started doing drawings of multiple ideas that I have and handing them to her to demonstrate what I'm looking for but it's just not getting through. What is the best way I can communicate to my graphic designer to get the end result I'm looking for without causing work tension? How do you prefer to be spoken to when a coworker/client wants a certain vision?
