(Academic)(Survey) Are you an Engineer and/or Designer?

A few months ago, we (a group of researchers from the University of Michigan) posted a survey asking about your approach to engineering and design. With your help, we were able to develop a scale for measuring engineering and design attitudes! A paper summarizing the findings has been accepted to the 2019 International Conference on Engineering Design and will appear in the conference proceedings in the coming months. A few slides containing a quick summary of the study and its outcomes are linked here.

We were surprised and delighted by the number of responses from Reddit (n=369). Thank you! It is also worth noting that the results from the Reddit responses were similar to responses from verified industry experts to whom we distributed the survey.

Current Study:

We are now running a second study to understand the relationship between these attitudes and performance on analytical reasoning and divergent thinking tasks. Please see below for the invitation to the current study.

Study Recruitment:

You are invited to participate in a research study on attitudes about engineering and design, and the relationship between these attitudes and performance on analytical reasoning and divergent thinking tasks. In order to participate, you must be an engineer, designer, or other STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math) professional/student at least 18 years of age.

If you choose to participate, you will be asked to complete a survey and five short answer questions in Qualtrics, an online survey platform. You will also be asked to complete some demographic questions. The study will take 15-20 minutes total. The study has been approved by the University of Michigan Institutional Review Board [HUM00154807].
