Can someone knowledgeable explain the Ubisoft logo (2017) change

Apologies if this isn't the right subreddit for something like this or if it's been beaten to death, but I was hoping to hear some opinions from people more knowledgeable than myself regarding design.

Back in 2017 Ubisoft changed the design of their logo, but I think it looks very poorly done whereas the previous logo is much better in my opinion. The new logo makes me think of someone learning the pen tool in Photoshop for the first time to be honest. I don't claim to be a design expert by any stretch of the imagination, but I took a crack at changing the current logo a bit just to see what it might be like without the harsh edges sticking out. Here's a few pictures comparing the old and new(ish) logo, as well as the edits I made. https://imgur.com/a/OeEaFEh

I've seen discussions similar to this one, like people making fun of the Google 'G' because the lines of the color changes didn't perfectly line up, but it was pointed out how that was very much intentional and when made to line up perfectly something just looked off about it. I'm hoping someone who actually knows what they're talking about can do something similar for the Ubisoft logo because I can't see what they were thinking actually approving this design, but I know that a company that large wouldn't take updating their logo lightly. The only reason I can come up with to explain it would be going for a more minimalist design and getting rid of the color gradients and such, but I think a silhouette of their old logo looks quite a bit more polished.

Great design resource
