Typereel | A site I built for appreciating type

Disclaimer: I originally posted this in r/graphic_design but had no responses. I thought the Design sub might find it of interest so hopefully reposting here doesn't break any rules. If so then I'll gladly remove it.

-----

Greetings design redditors,

So, this post is in part to ask for feedback and in part as a call for submissions. A couple of months ago I quietly launched Typereel, a resource for designers to appreciate work involving type. I've been spending some time personally contacting designers (some of whom I found in this subreddit) and posting content as and when I can. It's a surprisingly slow process.

Anyway, that aside, I think it's time I ask the design community if they'd even use something like this of if there are features they'd find valuable. The idea for Typereel came from being an active contributor to font id forums (there's a subreddit for that too, which I try to contribute to when I can). It occured to me that a lot of the specimens people were uploading were really obscure, and I was discovering all of these new typefaces I'd never heard of. I wanted to try to redress the whole experience of discovering new type; to create a place where designers could get inspiration for future work and also (if needed) upload unidentified type specimens to be identified by a community of like-minded designers.

So here we are. If you're a designer and regularly (or even occasionally) use type in your work then please give your thoughts on whether this is something you'd use. If you have ideas for features, then post those too! I intentionally launched it pretty low to the ground. The next steps are to get feedback from the design community and build features there's a clear demand for, and continue adding great content - which brings me to the second reason for posting:

If you have work you'd like to see up on Typereel then by all means post a link here and let me know what type is used. As I'm sure you can appreciate, the idea of Typereel is that the work shown on the inspiration reel is visually appealing and a professional level of design. That's not to say it can't be subtle use of type; of course it can. I'll happily consider all submissions. Currently there's no direct way for users to submit specimens for inclusion in the inspiration reel through the site itself, and that's for a couple of reasons. Firstly, I have yet to seek adequate advice regarding IP law and how to manage copyright infringement. It's a grey area to me and I'd rather not open floodgates for automatic inclusion of submissions at the risk of IP theft. Some research needed there (if you have advice on that, I'm all ears). Secondly there's no 'quality control' feature as such i.e. user upvote/downvote that ensures good quality content. There are a number of ways this could be done but I'm reluctant to build such a feature unless I know it a) works and b) is what users want in the first place.

Thanks for reading, and thanks in advance for feedback and comments.

Oh and apologies if this seems like the wrong place to post this - I just figured the design community would be the best group to reach for thoughts and feedback.

Great design resource
