ADVICE NEEDED: How to transition from small shop with low-value projects, to small shop with big value projects?

I'm involved in a 3-person shop that competes for work in the commercial video space: training videos, corporate videos, and some TV and animation work. We have a dedicated office.

We do very good work, and have generally won projects based on cost.

We got a sniff of some higher value contracts, but actually lost a bid to a more expensive firm, and decided to take this as a wake-up call.

What sorts of things do small-time shops need to do in order to compete for these big-time type contracts? Are there social/business queues that tend to self-identify shops as "small-time" to potential clients, and if so, are there any ways to overcome these queues to (1) raise rates, and (2) compete for more expensive business?

Any tips from those who have dealt with this transition are GREATLY appreciated. What kinds of things did your shop do to outgrow the garage-group smell/look/feel?
