Cardboard Base Designs

Hi Design side of reddit! Background story: Me and my friend like building massive cardboard bases, and sticking them out in thunderstorms and waiting for the rain and wind to destroy it with us inside. Question: We are wondering if you redditors had any great design ideas, we would like a small design, but can fit up to 4 people. A cool design, maybe a bit modern, just make it so its buildable in a day, and isn't too material expensive (tape and cardboard wise). Go crazy! Thanks guys!

How to join the Design Science subreddit?

I am a PhD student of Design Science. Messaged the moderators of r/designscience, but no one responded.

Any idea how to join that group or what specifically should i send in my message to get accepted into that group?

Learning Social Design - Any good articles or books?

So according to wiki, Social Design is:

Social design is design that is mindful of the designer’s role and responsibility in society; and the use of the design process to bring about social change.[1]

Which sounds interesting enough, but the article is pretty short in usable real life examples.

Do you you of any good resources in this topic?

I am 100% new to design.

Hey everyone, I recently started a new job (that essentially doesn't have a job title) but my boss has tasked me with work that flirts with design.

I only have Microsoft Publisher. I have made about as high quality of content as I can with the limited software and I am hoping to show him the results and get him to purchase an Adobe license so I may begin to learn and produce higher quality content.

I am looking for amateur design tips to help me along. What are some tricks a new guy should master early? What software is industry wide? Do people actually use Publisher? Where can I learn how to self teach myself graphic design, as well as UI/UX...

Etc.

Any of this will help me out. Thanks so much everyone!

Employer won’t credit the designer (me)

I’m currently a freelance designer, finishing up a 3-week contract with a small magazine publisher in Chicago.

As we near the deadline, the editor removes my name from the masthead without telling me. She did this not for the sake of spacing or design, but because I don’t earn being credited until I’ve worked with them for three months. That’s typically their policy for inclusion in the masthead.

However, this is not their typical magazine; they (I) have redesigned the entire issue and introduced a brand new aesthetic. Having played such an integral role in the magazine, I feel like I’ve earned some recognition for my work.

The director is out of the office today so the editor and I will discuss the matter with her tomorrow, but I’d like to know what you think. Do you agree with me? Am I off-base on this one? How would you approach the conversation? In your opinion, important is recognition?

TLDR — Employer might not give me credit for a project. How do I approach that conversation?

Money Makers (99% Invisible) - For a long time, anti-counterfeiting laws made it illegal to show US currency in movies. Now you can show real money, but fake money is often preferred. Creating fake money that doesn’t break the law, but looks real enough for film, is a tough design challenge.

What do you think of the system of my school? (Multimedia Design)

So, last year when I joined this school, the new system came.

We don't get regular lessons. We do project 90% of the time (10% theory), and the process of the project is getting repeated every project, going a little deeper each time. They mostly let us swim in the deep, we don't really get obvious assignments, you have to teach yourself. Because when you get to work in the field, nobody is going to tell you what to do, you must do that yourself.

The upside of this is that we get a very strong idea of the process. Why the process is important, and exactly which steps are required. And of course, team work is a big part.

The downside is that we have less theory knowledge. Some might not even control the design tools very well (Sketch, Creative suite, etc). They don't go in depth about that, since they say it's something you can learn in a week if you work at a company. The process you can't learn easily.

What do you think of this?

[UI] Creating a definitive list of adjectives to define a product's identity

Hey everyone,

I'm a UX & UI designer and — like a lot of you — I've been facing customers for a long time.

One of the most common tool I use in order to understand what identity they want for their product is to ask them to give me 2-3 adjectives they would use to describe their product.
One of the issue with this method is that you need to extract actionnable adjectives versus general adjectives (like "beautiful", "simple"...).

My rule of thumb is that — if you can't think of a palette from the adjective alone — it's probably not an actionnable adjective.

My end goal is to be able to provide my clients with a short list of identity adjectives paired with palettes & font combinations to help them choose faster and more efficiently.

This is where I need your help and experience :

With trial and error, I've already defined a list of 5 non-overlapping adjectives with concrete meaning :

  • Serious (safe, corporate...)
  • Modern (avant-garde, hype...)
  • Playful (fun, joyful...)
  • Luxurious (Fancy, high-end...)
  • Warm (welcoming, friendly...)

I'd love for you to challenge my current list and add — from your experience — the adjectives you think would fit!

Thanks a lot

Is there a lot of work in the research part of design?

Hello, I'm a Communication & Multimedia Designer. I'm in my second year of a four year program.

In most project groups, the part everyone dreads is the research part. I've noticed in my projects that that's the part I'm most interested in. Not just plain deskresearch, but also a lot of UX research. So Data that goes into Persona's, User Journeys, Sensagram's, etc.

I love all the analytical work.

Are there special positions for this kind of work in design firms?
