How do you get objects to look random?

Within a defined space, how do you arrange a variety objects in a way that is pleasing to the eye but also appears to be random?

When I try to make this happen, it still looks "arranged," the exact opposite of the effect I am going for. I know I can't be the only person to struggle with this - maybe some of you have figured it out?
