Advice on getting into design?

I would really like to move into design work, but I have essentially no background or real design skills. I’m specifically interested in UI design, ideally for games but I’m also very interested in web/mobile app work.

Where is the best place to start? I live about 20-30 minutes away from Pasadena City College, which has what appears to be a pretty decent design program. I’ve looked at options like General Assembly, but that’s pretty pricey. CareerFoundry looks promising, but I think I would like something in person. I am fortunate enough to be married to someone that has a stable, steady income, and I plan to continue freelancing on the side.

So I guess my question is this: if you were starting over and could have chosen a different educational path, what would you choose? Would it be different if you were switching careers?

I’m not sure if this is useful, but some background about me:

I’m 34, and am currently an unemployed technical writer. Although I like aspects of what I’ve been doing for the last five years, I’ve come to learn that it’s basically going to be impossible to find the level of technical writing work I enjoy with the size of company I like (small).
