Professional opinion on a touchy subject

It came to my attention recently that a client of mine worked with another designer using my work and now the client is giving the designer all the credit, after modifying my work in a very lazy manner. I brought it up to the client and they immediately fired off 5 rapid responses apologizing and claiming they "totally forgot to hit me up for the changes they wanted made". In your careers, how have you handled these situations? My biggest issue is less the gank from the other designer, but more so the fact that this is exposure and credit I am losing which would benefit me. I am contemplating reaching out to the designer, but I feel it really isn't worth it. What if anything have any of you done when this happens? I am not looking to go down any sort of legal route, but also not really sure what else exists. Cheers everyone!
