Kimball Furniture - Design Hack Competition

Might be a long shot, but did anyone else here submit an entry to the Kimball Design Hack competition they were running with Metropolis Magazine? The prompt was to design tech-integrated furniture, which I thought was pretty neat.

Upon submittal, I didn’t receive any kind of conformation, they pushed the entire competition deadline back a month and have some conflicting dates in their terms and agreements that aren’t matching up to the end of competition. I’m hoping they didn’t just abandon this competition because of low entry turnout. There’s some serious money on the line, and I’m sure those who did enter put some good time into the projects.

Just wondering if anyone’s kept up with it or entered.

Tablet to show off my work

So within the next year I'll be having interviews for universities and I wish to show my digital portfolio. I don't really wanna bring my laptop with me and my phone is obviously too small. I wanna get a tablet to allow them to flip through my portfolio.

What's a good cheap tablet that I can use to show off my work at an interview?

Rectangular Repeatable Pattern

So I made a pattern, cool.

I then decided I wanted some more variety in the pattern so I doubled the width and height, took some time but I made it double the width, but I didn't make it double the height.

The pattern still works, but it is no longer "square"

Will I run into any problems in the future with this method? Is there any good reasoning why I shouldn't make a rectangular pattern instead of a square pattern in practical uses?

I can't think of any, personally, it still repeats perfectly, but I might go back in and double the height just for more variety again, just wondered if anyone had run into any problems using a pattern that wasn't exactly w=h.

Switching fonts is proving difficult on my new work's computer. How can I fix this?

This has been a slight issue with Adobe products for years but it's only been with the occasional font on my own computer. However, my computer at work is a nightmare.

In Photoshop or Illustrator, when I select text and click in the font dropdown to assign one, by scrolling on the mousewheel or pressing the up/down cursors, normally I can look at the text with every font until I find one that suits best.

However, it will either get stuck on the font and refuse to scroll down the list further, or it will jump right down to the bottom of the fonts list.

How can I fix this? Do I have to delete most of the installed fonts and start again?

Thanks for any advice you can give!

Contract negotiations - putting work in my portfolio?

I'm going through the growing pains of going out on my own for the first time, as opposed to working for a company or agency.

Something I'm really having issues with is that 99% of clients do not want the work publicly displayed on a website or put in my portfolio.

I've done some reading; it seems that most designers don't just sign the client's contract, but have their own as well.

I feel like my portfolio is mostly made up of made-up projects due to this reason. To make matters worse, one potential client told me she needed to see more actual "client work." I informed her I had too many NDAs to be able to oblige, and instead of respecting my commitment to my contracts, that's when she dropped off the face of the Earth. One client actually e-mailed me to enforce the NDA, even though I thought the portion of the work I did display was very non-revealing and did not display any sensitive information.

In your experience, are most clients okay with signing your contract as well? Has anyone ever reacted negatively? Did it ever make you lose out on a job? What other advice do you have for ensuring that I'm able to put some of the work in my portfolio or on a website?

Design Help

I am currently a student studying graphic design and I want to practice some skills to keep me fresh over the summer. Right now I feel like all I have been doing is trying to create logos and not really any advertising material (brochures, posters, magazine,etc.). I mostly haven't done these because I really don't know many techniques on how to create these and make them look really appealing. Do any of you have any tips besides just looking around for inspiration on how to create these? Or do you have any practice projects that helped you get better? Any advice is helpful :)

How do you work on High PPI displays? (on, not for)

I've working for a while now both for and on high PPI displays. ( @2x and @3x)

Working FOR them is pretty standard, but working ON them really changes from person to person.

For example, when working on a web design on photoshop, do your work on your standard resolution ( let's say 1920x1080) and look at it @ 100% and sometimes 200% or do you work on 1920x1080@2x (3840x2160)

What's your workflow like?

What is the current most recommended software to easily create UI mockups?

Hello! I'm learning android development and need to find a way to easily create material design / mobile UI mockups.

The problem here is that I don't have experience nor do I have the money to pay for tools such as photoshop. So, what I'm kind of asking is creating a basic UI with drag and drop tools.

I've worked with designers and I know this is not ideal, but it'll do for now as I get the hang of things.

Furthermore, since this is strictly personal and not for business, I do need it to be free or as cheap as possible!

I know that's a tough one, honestly. But I was hoping there was such a tool that would allow me these type of mockups.

Is there any software recommended for that?
