I currently am a graphic designer for a small soccer retailer and have been for about 2 years now but going to start looking for better opportunities.
Unfortunately I was hired without much of a portfolio. The work I did there and in college are decent but it’s nothing really big beyond simple edits, banners, newsletters, rushed semester projects, etc.
Moving forward, before I begin assembling a better portfolio, would employers only want to see the work for the soccer retailer? Since it’s in context of a work environment and the only professional experience I have?
Would employers still care to see personal projects (I.e. infographics, photo-manipulation, collages, logos, illustrations, etc.) I did mostly out of my own interest? I have a few in mind but wouldn’t want to waste time on them.
I’m really not even sure how many pieces and what kinds to put in it. I know I need to demonstrate my skill set, any recommendations for best types of projects to get that across?
Am I thinking too hard about this?
Any advice would be greatly appreciated!
