What do you guys think of spec work

What's your take, stories and anything related to spec work

I just ended a conversation with a potential client who told me my design idea (free sketch, composition) would be up against other candidates, to this I said I didn't participate in spec work, and he replied with why would anyone buy anything without a trial or an example, I sent him the great http://www.nospec.com and he got mad telling me he didn't need a lecture, but I replied I sent it because maybe he didn't have a lot of experience with designers and professional design. ?
