Why don't washers and dryers have the same sort of dial/start mechanism? And why are they always different in the same way

What I'm talking about is this:

  1. Washer - turn dial to set wash kind, pull or push the knob to start.
  2. Dryer - turn the knob to set dry time, push the separate start button to start.

This has been the case for nearly every dryer/washer I've ever come across. I don't see why this makes sense in any way whatsoever.

EDIT: Apparently newer, more digital interfaces are a little more user friendly
