Why don't online brands choose to change their logos and branding gradually over time instead of suddenly?

It seems that having dozens of intermediary steps would allow a logo design to change over a year or so without confusing customers and losing brand recognition?

Since many companies exist purely online, it wouldn't increase costs significantly.
