Google Maps vs Apple Maps

Hi guys, a few weeks ago I read a really good article/blog post here pointing out how google cleaned up google maps before adding new features yet Apple maps didn't. I'd love to share it at work as we're having a similar problem but I can't find it anywhere. I don't suppose anyone could point me the right way?

Conflict of morals

So, I live in Alabama and I'm a bleeding heart liberal. I hate Donald Trump. I was recently asked to design a shirt that features Trump prominently. I'm torn on whether to accept this job or to turn it down and stick to my guns. I know it's probably not even a major issue, but I don't want to support any sort of pro-Trump rhetoric in any way because I think he's horrible and destructive and idiotic and misogynistic and racist and cancerous to our country, but I also need the money.

What would YOU do in this situation?

How to find design jobs based on the industry you want to work in?

I'm currently a "Marketing Designer" - I basically work as an in-house powerhouse for anything design related.

I design email campaigns, product brochures, trade show booths and materials, billboards, PowerPoints, t-shirts, promotional items, web graphics, UI graphics, and more.

This position has been great in that it's allowed me to become somewhat well-rounded in many different areas, and it's been a stable source of income for many years now. However, I don't feel like it's allowing me to grow as a designer or in my career, and I also suspect that I am very underpaid.

I would love to do the same thing I'm doing now - just for a company and industry that I'm more interested in or passionate about. I feel like I could do really amazing work if my heart was in it more.

The trouble I've been having: on job search sites, you can search by your job title or the industry you work in. I've never seen a site where you, for instance, can search for a design job, then filter the results by industry.

Does anyone know if an app or a site like this exists? Or, even a service that matches you with jobs based on both your expertise and the industry you want to work in?

I'm sure I'm not the only person looking for something like this. If nothing like this exists right now, someone should get on it! Or maybe I should! :)

TLDR; Does anyone know of any apps, sites, or services where you can search for jobs based on (1) your current title or area of expertise, and (2) the industry that you want to work in? If you're, say, a graphic designer that wants to work in the Agriculture industry, it takes an enormous amount of time to find a job that fits. The same is probably true for other professions - for example, an IT professional who wants to work at a Zoo.

Should I push harder? 3D rendering

I am an interior architecture and design student who just gained an internship from an art consulting firm located in SF. During one of our meetings I made my bosses aware of my abilities in using 3d rendering software. Since we deal with many high-end companies, I thought they might be able to utilize my skills for clients that are doing installation type art. Well, they recently took me up on that offer and had me do a mock-up of a forced perspective installation. Perhaps unfortunately for me when the subject of compensation came up, they offered me the same pay I would receive for my internship. I feel as though $20/hr is too low for 3d rendering work in SF. I have seen anywhere from $30-$100 an hour for this type of work. Granted, my experience is limited and this would be my first paid commission for rendering work, but am I devaluing myself by taking $10 under the range?

I really enjoy this type of work, and it seems they have a need for this. I just want to be sure that I'm being fairly compensated for my skills. Any advice would be welcome, thanks in advance!

Hi! I'm new.

As my title so eloquently states, I'm new. not really just here to be honest, to digital design in general. I'm still in highschool, where I took a class that taught me photoshop. To make an long story short, i mess around with it and decided digital design was where i wanted to go in life.

So I have this school, It's called Suncoast Technical college that my parents really want me to go to, and this specific program called "Digital Design" it lasts about a year. Well from what I can tell all I'll be leaving with (besides knowledge and experience) is a certification in Photoshop and Illustrator.

Is that okay starting out as a digital artist?

How do I accurately price myself when moving from a small to large city?

I am wondering how to price myself.

I've moved to Los Angeles from Vermot. I have worked in a marketing agency for ~5 years, design studio/freelance for 2, as well as other projects taking over responsibilities like branding, creative direction, design, and production (small agency, lots of hats) with large international brands.

Because I have experience with large clients, I feel I have more value than somebody who has worked as a designer for a place that needs design, rather than produces design. I hope that sentence made sense.

Looking for freelance, I've checked out Creative Circle just so I can get a start and pay the bills for now. Seeing my experience, I was priced out at roughly $30/hr or $65,000 - $80,000 annually. I am aware that the creative staffing agency needs to shave some off the top for their pockets but I am unsure how much.

I also am unsure of how to price my work when living in a large city. The cost of living certainly different between Los Angeles and Vermont with rent, utilities, and everything. For being at an agency for ~5 years in Vermont, I only made around $xxxxx. I tell my friends in NYC/LA/PDX that and they look at me bug-eyed.

Thanks for the help!

Do you ever just get the urge to draw or "design" something but you lack the skill to do so?

Design has always been what I admire the most about products/objects, and I've always wanted to attempt it. However I find it tough to put my ideas into paper in a presentable manner, because I lack the skill to draw.

It's the whole reason I got into engineering school instead of design school (thought product design could work for me.)

I've recently become very into mechanical watches and I admire the design decision behind so many of them. But when I feel so inspired and take a piece of paper I get turned off by my sloppy lines and lazy circle.

Has any of you ran into similar problems before? I know from what I've been reading that it's something many new designers go through (especially car designer) but end up overcoming.

Alternatives to Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator for someone who wants to get back into design and possibly back into the job field?

Was curious if anyone can recommend decent/good programs for Mac based designer that is used to using Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator but didn't want to do the monthly subscription. What are the alternatives that professionals use and would be translatable to the job field? I've looked into a few programs such as Affinity Designer/Photo but they look rather amateurish. I currently work with a Wacom tablet and a 27" monitor which I will be upgrading if needed.

How to create animations of user flow with screens, and embedding them on Squarespace/Medium?

I've always wanted to create a looping .gif of walking through an app, something like this.

How do I go about creating these GIFs with pre-made Sketch screens? I've played around with InVision but I think they only have prototypes where you have to manually click things, not an automatic looping demo of your app.

If anyone’s familiar with Krita, I just got it and I need some help with a couple things

  1. I’m using a tablet and the pressure sensitivity doesn’t seem to work with it. I’ve already gone into the settings and tried changing pen pressure from available to current but that didn’t seem to do anything

  2. Whenever I start to draw something, the first part of it is always a straight line before it starts to make the shape I draw. Any way to fix this?

Looking to buy a new Graphic Tablet, NEED ADVICE

So, I had a Huion H610 Pro, it was my first tablet and I had it for almost 1 year, but recently I lost the pen and I cant buy one where I live so I would have to buy it online, like I did with my tablet. So instead of that, I decided to just buy a better one. Screen Tablets are too expensive for me, so I was looking at the Wacom Intous Pro, wich I've heard is called the best non-screen tablet, but it was also a little bit on the expensive side for me. In my opinion the H610 PRO was decent, but I also dont have experience with other graphic tablets, so right now what I'm looking for is something in the middle between a Wacom Intous Pro and the Huion H610 PRO quality-wise, that will alsoo hopefully be not as expensive as the Intous Pro.

TLDR: Looking for a good graphic tablet, better than my previos Huin H610 PRO, but not as expensive as a Wacom Intous Pro (wich I know is kind of like the best, but I dont have the money right now).

Looking for quick & easy template to create 1-page "pinterest-type" website.

I’m a print graphic designer and my skills relating to web design are pretty darn limited.

I have a client who has asked me to create a one-page mood board or "pinterest-type" site for a project we're working on.

What is the easiest template-based source that I can use to quickly put this together without any fuss? I know this must exist, but I'm not really sure where to look.

I have Creative Cloud and looked into Spark, but that seemed too basic. Or at least, I didn’t see a way to build what I needed.

The site is for an event. The client wants guests to be able to visit the site where we’ll provide style inspiration for the party. Site visitors won't be pining things like Pinterest, it's soley to be used as reference.

Pantone & Transparency Question

Hi everyone

I have FieryXF RIP software and a .AI file containing spot colors and transparency. I have a drop shadow on an image object that is on top of a Pantone spot color background.

Is it possible to create a suitable PDF that preserves spot colors but does not cause a problem with the transparency?

I have flattened the shadow using edit > flatten transparency, which created a CMYK object for the shadow with a white background. I then set that to multiply to get rid of the white background. I tried to print using PDFX-4 but the spot colors beneath the shadow do not print well (they are entirely hue shifted to green when they were originally yellow and brown spot colors). The spot colors elsewhere are unaffected and print normally.

I know I can convert to SWOP destination but I'd rather preserve the Pantone specs because these are GRACoL certified by the spectroproofer and are intended to be given to our vendors as color targets.

How can I export a suitable PDF that preserves spot colors and transparency without converting the entire thing to CMYK?
