A colleague of mine is an ex-employee of a major electronics brand and they claim that it's never okay to use a white version of a company's colour logo.
Personally, I believe it's a fine idea to include a white logo on dark backdrops for contrast. But, they believe it's never okay to change the colour of your logo (ever).
I'm trying to make them see the light. In my opinion, many big brands do this regularly and there's no problem, even with consistency and brand recognition.
