Trying to create a specific type of static home page.

Hi there. I'm willing to do the research and teach myself how to do it, but I don't know how what to search for what I'm looking for.

I'm working on my personal website so I can pick up freelance work and have a specific idea in mind for the static home page. What I want to do is create a static home page that presents multiple options for potential clients to click on, based on their needs/interests. So there would be multiple boxes with a descriptive title for them to click on.

For example; one would say "Creative", another would say "Marketing", and so on.

What should I be searching for so I can teach myself how to do it?

question regarding changing properties of element from another elements css ?

Hi, I have another question. Not sure if I phrased that correctly in the title, which may be why I'm having trouble finding an answer. I am trying to change the border of another element with an anchor is being hovered. Is there a way to do this in css ? Also any friendly people that are on feel like being my friends ? As a beginner Wordpress designer, is it cheating to use plugins?

Greets all,

I'm trying to build a basis for my themes and learning along the way.

However in some areas I am getting stuck but I am adamant that I stay away from plugins because they end up doing all the work for me.

However, in some cases is it suitable to use them? Or am I better off learning the core of the functionality I am after on my own?

What's your recommended web hosting site?

I'm looking to register a website, I used to trust godaddy.com but I do not anymore.

I only know of hostgator. I plan on using wordpress for my template. Not only trust, but also by price. What hosting site would you recommend, I'm on a budget and would like to keep it affordable.

question about SCSS

Going from freelance web designer to full-time employee for company. What should I expect?

Since I graduated from college in 2012 with a degree in Philosophy, I've worked various odd jobs and supplemented my income by building websites for clients I'd find on craigslist or through word of mouth. I really enjoyed the flexibility that it provided me to pursue my first passion--MUSIC.

Hustling to make ends meet has gotten old so I decided to look for a full-time job as a web designer. I have a couple of interviews lined up but I'm freaking out about them. I'm struggling to visualize what they are going to expect of me and what my day to day is going to look like.

I'm also concerned that I don't have what it takes to get the job. I've only worked on sites for individuals and small businesses. I imagine working for a large company that has a site that processes large amounts of data and receives millions of visitors is going to be very different.

TL;DR. I'm nervous about interviewing for my "first real" job. Do you have any general advice? Could you recommend what I should read or brush up on for moving from designing small sites to enterprise web sites?

Working on my first "personal" free lance site, advice?

Hey there, I figured you guys might be able to help me as I find I'm having trouble getting started. Little background on me, I've worked in web development / services professionally for 5 years now and there aren't too many things I haven't implemented or maintained in web development. I when for a large tech company and we serve millions of users daily.

Also, a little background on the project. My cousin is just starting out with a pretty successful business. Now he wants a basic website that explains his business, shows his work, provides web presence and allows potential clients to contact him.

I started by teaching myself Ruby on rails and once I got into the thick of it I realized that this approach was going o be overkill for this project. Now I am just looking to go pure html and JavaScript.

Anyone have helpful practices to help them get through times where they are stuck on where to start? Any advice for technologies I may want to look into? Mainly I know I can do it technically, I'm just sure not what structure / color scheme or anything at this point. Looking for some helpful way to just get started past this coders block. Thanks

Got invited for interview for a front end design job. I have zero experience. What to do?

I graduated with an IT degree last year. But i didnt want to pursue IT as a career.. and it was hard to find a job so my first job was a resume screening specialist. Current job is on fraud analyst. Which is kinda close with my dgree cause i handle database and used SQL.

But ive always wanted to get into web design. I applied at this startup company and they invited me for interview. Their posting requires 1 year exp. I only did basic web design back in college.

Should i even go on the interview or are they just gonna humiliate me?

[help] Dumb question about avoiding repeat coding.

I have a static website of 7 pages hosted on GitHub.

Headers and footers are the same on each page. Can I just code it once and all it where necessary instead of duplicating it 7 times?

Questions about navigation customization

So I've been trying to make the navigation bar more interesting. It sounds simple but I have yet to figure out a way to make it happen which is pretty frustrating.

1. Wouldn't it be cool if each nav item has a different width? I learned how to change the nav bar's color & width as a whole, but how do I go in and change each link individually?

2. Most of the times an underline is just a straight line (to highlight the current menu item). Is it possible to do a double-underline or a wave? Multiple layers of waves (so it looks like a tide)?

These are the two main things I've been trying these days and I thought I'd share them and ask for a little guidance. Sorry if there is a tutorial somewhere and I was just oblivious to it.

Trouble making full width, collapsible content dividers

I'm trying to divide the content on my pages into sections and have it collapse into several clickable dividers, here's a crude example http://ift.tt/1khthV8.

My research has turned up lots on dropdown menus and the like but nothing designed for collapsing entire sections of content. Any thoughts on where to get started with this? Is there a script available for a similar function?

Experiences with Magento?

I was doing some research into Magento as an eCommerce/CMS solution for the company I was working for, but my contract ended before I could look any further into it.

I had come across Magento years ago, but now it is a completely new beast, owned by eBay.

Does anyone have any experiences working with it? I'd be interested in building a shop at some stage. Does the enterprise edition offer much more than the community edition? Does anyone have certification, and has it helped them professionally?

I work in marketing, but have good technical knowledge.

I want to present my photography / news article project in a similar format to these two pages (with the help of a designer) but am I being overambitious?

I'm not sure if I should be posting this here but I just want to get some quick recommendations / suggestions if possible.

I've seen a lot of exciting changes recently in news and media publication and this is due to the inclusion of clever web design as a key part of the presentation.

New York Times - Greenland Is Melting Away.

BBC News - The Golden Dream.

I'd love to incorporate similar elements to present my final major project such as:

-The high quality gif(?) to introduce the article.

-A map which would adjust depending on the user scrolling.

-Page breaks which potentially change while scrolling with some images stationary and some moving.

I'm not educated in the technical aspects but what I'm asking is would it be costly to produce something like this? I have 3 weeks to do it. Any advice would be really welcome! Thanks

CodeAcademy: What now?

What now? I have learned the basic JavaScript, HTML(CSS), PHP, jQuery, etc... but what do I do now? I know start coding and I have, but I still have huge gaps in my knowledge. I have started to use Dreamweaver for my code. However I want to learn more before I create. not to mention I don't have any idea what to create. Also how do I implement jQuery into Dreamweaver? should i be writing code somewhere else? and I really want to get good at optimizing interlaying JS into HTML to have the fastest page load with large amounts of data.

Sorry if this is so erratic, I just fell like I have hit a wall in my learning process. Thanks for any help in advance!

What's wrong with Skeleton?

I really, really like Skeleton because it's easier to customize than say Foundation and it's not bloated at all while still having all the basic stuff you need. Now I wanted to use it for my portfolio but every now and then I heard that Skeleton's an outdated, bad framework.

Why is that? It obviously hasn't been updated in almost a year, but is that even necessary?

I'm looking for an alternative, even though I like Bootstrap I want to try out something new and stand out a bit, at least with my portfolio. I feel like some of their stuff is not nearly as easily customizable as it's made out to be (the navigation types for example).
