notice how the icons and everything is detailed and well made this was obviously before windows 8 was released. Now look at windows 10: http://ift.tt/2cyoIrl
everything is flat and simplistic, this is why design is the best price to effort ratio. Everything looks more appealing and modern now you can create flat simple pictures from little effort and it will attract a lot of attention. Same thing with the google logo:
notice how the 2010-2013 one has shading and is detailed and then they changed it to a flat simplistic design. And then changed then they font all together.
Those are my reasons why computer design today is the best outcome for little effort.
