Setting up a freelance design career online?

Do you guys find effective to promote completely online freelance work?

I mean, I know I can start a business freelancing locally (in my country, Costa Rica) with meetings and stuff; but is it worth it to aim for work conducted online with people outside the country?

I speak somewhat fluid english so I'm not afraid to Skype but would clients find it practical? Are online freelancers something people are looking forward to hire?
