Hey everyone,
I'm currently a sophomore majoring in Finance and a minor in Computer Science at Xavier (fairly prestigious/reputable). I will also have my MBA one year after undergrad. Computer Science is in a different school so double majoring isn't a realistic option. I currently own a fairly successful web design company with close to $60k in sales a year, with a variance of approx. $20k.
I know HTML and CSS fairly well but I hope to be intermediate/advanced when I graduate. I also know slight JS but hope to learn much more of that before I graduate (from what I understand, JS is the most important to learn for software). I know Python, Ruby and Bootstrap at a very basic level. I also know backend protocol such as FTP, DNS, and security. Essentially, I know UX fairly well and UI a little less (as far as web design goes). My business organization skills/legal/sales knowledge in the industry is extraordinary for my age. My business has been operating flawlessly since I was 16. Unfortunately, my portfolio is composed of almost exclusively Wordpress websites. They are highly customized and include custom coding, should I include those or are they slightly embarrassing and unimpressive?
I want to format my portfolio perfectly for when I graduate in 2-3 years. I understand not having a CS major can go against me, so I want to compensate for that with industry experience. My GPA is also lackluster at ~3.0. I was thinking about having a website built in each stack and then examples of each coding language for my portfolio.
Software What languages should I include to get a job in financial software? My current portfolio is very design oriented and I know I need to change that to get into software.
Tl;dr - My portfolio right now is highly focused on Web Design, will employers still be interested to see this? Are Wordpress websites that use custom logic/coding impressive or should they not be included at all? Is it realistic to seek a job in financial software with only a minor in Computer Science?
Thank you!
