Why did the 90s use a lot of shapes and turquoise colors?

I recently stumbled upon /r/90sdesign, and it really had me thinking, why are there so many designs that feature turquoise and the use of shapes? The classic example is the turquoise and purpose 90s restaurant cup. Here are a few more I like to use.

I was born in the mid 90s, so some of this was still around when I was growing up. I'm just curious, what caused this trend?
