Best software for freelancers to manage their small business?

I've been employed by other companies for a few years, and done plenty of freelance work, invoicing and all, on my own for a while. I'm hoping to take the freelance gig full time though, and I want to be more official about tracking everything and reporting it properly on my taxes. I've been recommended QuickBooks, and checked out Wave a bit, but does anyone have experience with those programs or another that they feel works well for independent designers? I don't need a ton of the extra features that some of these use. I don't employ anyone else or sell goods, just my own design services. Just trying to report as a small business in my taxes and hopefully maximize my deductions. Thanks!

The World Series patches on the players' uniforms are shiny this year. Anyone know why?

This is the first time I've noticed a championship emblem on a game Jersey in any major league US sport look like plastic, vinyl, or just a sticker of some sort. It doesn't give me the same feel as an embroidered emblem patch does. Maybe it's just nostalgia, but I'm wondering if anyone has some insight on the design reasoning behind this. And is it something that happens outside the US? Or even something that I'm just noticing how in the US?

Is it worth transferring after first year of university if you want to move, or is it better to wait until master's? (If you continue your education.)

Designers! What are your experiences with recruiters and placement agencies in the design industry?

I currently live in Portland, OR. Due to the presence of Nike, Adidas, Intel, W+K, Columbia, Amazon, and the army of smaller agencies that support these companies, recruiters and placement agencies are the only viable option regarding successful job placement.

A brief (and possibly incorrect) history is several years back many designers had worked as 1099 contractors. Many of the companies were somewhat exploitative, requiring the contractor to work on site, supply their own computers and (often verified) programs with no paid vacation and overtime. A series of laws were implemented to crack down on these worker violations and recruiters filled the vacuum to manage placement. They offered W2/competitive pay trends, insurance and vacation to the employees while minimizing a VERY saturated market for the employers.

My experience with recruiters has been good overall, and have used them to both hire and get work. However as a potential employee, it is near-impossible to reach out to a company directly, and you have to plan for your resume, portfolio and education to be filtered heavily by the recruiter. Often there is a disconnect between the employer and the potential candidate, particularly regarding work experience. I have even heard that other fields such as health and construction are beginning to operate in the same fashion in the pacific northwest.

I am happily employed now, but have struggled with both of these scenarios of recruiter misrepresentation and exploited "freelance" opportunities. I don't think there is a right answer, but would really like to start a conversation about this trend that has deeply impacted our industry. Is this common in most other major cities now? How do you present yourself knowing these filters may possibly be in place?

Does group brainstorming really work?

Usually when I brainstorm, I want to be away from others.

Group brainstorming, I usually find a waste of time. It seems so that there have been some studies to show how useful it really is. In groups you have to deal with other people, strong personalities, and people who are to shy to speak their mind, thus their ideas get unheard, though maybe they could have the golden egg.

I suppose it highly depends on the group too. It would work in an utopian setting, where everyone would follow the principles perfectly, though few will really do so.

There's some interesting research on this too: http://ift.tt/2zTMMLJ

What do you think of this?

What is the quickest way to present a concept to the stakeholder?

We're doing a school project.

We have four concepts, which all need to be showed, so that the stakeholders can be the one to choose which one we'll be designing. What are some good ways to present a concept, that isn't at all fleshed out yet?

Self-learning logo design: Is it lazy to simply modify text to create simple logos?

Hi all,

I'm in the process of trying to teach myself how to design for print and web and just playing around with text logos. I find myself drawing logos on paper which ultimately end up as text logos where I modify the kearning, maybe tweak some corners here and there and presto - logo finished.

I don't actually draw or design anything as such, but essentially just modify text.

How is this type of logo design perceived? I know a logo should communicate the brand that it's aiming to represent, but in most instances with my work I simply design because I like the look of the finished product.

Thanks in advance :)

Amateur Question

I have never studied design. I just learned everything on my own, through youtube and playing around. I tweaked a logo for my sports team and it gets printed and used a lot. I edited the logo in photoshop and had it Vectorized through a service so its just a PDF file. Sometimes clothing companies ask me for a AI file and the color codes. So I just open the file and save it as an AI file and send it to them, which seems to work. I just don't understand why they ask me to do this. Isn't it the equivelent of asking me to google something for you? Or am I missing something fundamental.

Clippy and 'Virtual Assistants'

I'm looking for resources that discuss the use of 'virtual assistants' that are visible to the user on screen and direct them through an application, be it solely during on boarding or throughout the use of an app.

The most prominent example I can think of is Clippy from Microsoft Office, and potentially the spam app BonziBuddy.

With the advent of Siri, Cortana and similar technologies, these have come to be defined as 'virtual assistants' making it hard to find information on the potential impact of visual representations to users.

I was hoping somebody may have a different name I should be looking for, or some resources that discuss this potential element in user experience design.

Hello /r/Design, help us design a metaboard!

Hi there, we are a small team of students (Lisa, Anika, Michael, Aaron, Magdalena, Momo) at the University of Applied Science Ulm in Germany. Our project is the prototype-development of a intelligent/digital metaboard. Right now my team and I are gathering data about problems, interests and overall information about our target audience with a Google survey. With this analysis we want to summarize your input and generate a metaboard that helps organizing a creative work process and speeds it up. It would be nice if you could answer our survey in the following link: Link to the survey If you know of subreddits where we could crosspost this, let us know! Thank you very much for your attention! P.S: Sorry if our english is not the best :/

I'm trying spectrum right now but it isn't supported on High Sierra. I mainly use the color app as a way to organize pallets from different clients and brands. I use it to export apple color pallets as well. Then, of course, to build schemes as well. Thanks for your help!
